Screenshots that stay where you put them.

FloatSnap is a lightweight $5 macOS menu bar app that captures any region of your screen and pins it on top of every window — so you can reference one thing while typing into another. Annotate, OCR, drag, dismiss. Nothing is stored — everything stays on your Mac.

[Two tools in one]

A screenshot tool. And a sticky-note for your screen.

Most screenshot apps capture and forget. FloatSnap captures and keeps. Every snap pins itself on top of every window — like a Post-it on glass — and stays there indefinitely. Until you click it. Then it's gone.

01

The screenshot

⌘⇧9, drag, release. A high-fidelity capture, ready to annotate, OCR, save, or copy.

02

The sticky note

It floats. It stays. It outlives reboots-of-attention, app switches, and full-screen mode. Drag it where it helps.

03

The dismissal

One click. Gone. No folder of forgotten Screenshot 2026-05-02 at 11.42.13.png files filling your desktop.

Use it like Stickies, like Post-its, like a second monitor — except every note is a pixel-accurate screenshot of something you wanted to remember.

[Features]

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

01

Floating screenshots

Captures stay on top of every window. Drag them anywhere, pin them in place, click to dismiss.

02

Annotation tools

Pencil, circle, square, arrow, highlight. Mark up and screenshot back out — annotations bake into the export.

03

Built-in OCR

Select a region, extract its text via Apple Vision. Straight to your clipboard. Never retype a screenshot again.

04

Your second screen

One laptop, no monitor? Capture what you need, switch apps, keep the screenshot floating. A second monitor without the hardware — perfect for invoice and receipt data entry.

05

Save & copy

Export to PNG or JPEG at full Retina resolution. Or copy to clipboard with all annotations baked in.

06

Zero bloat

No dock icon, no background junk, no telemetry. Lives in your menu bar. ⌘⇧9 and go.

Shottr is a free macOS screenshot app with similar pin-on-screen functionality. CleanShot X (MacPaw) is a premium screenshot app with broader feature scope and matching higher price. ScreenFloat — sometimes confused with FloatSnap because of the similar name — is a different category of app: a screenshot manager/library by Eternal Storms Software focused on organizing and searching your screenshot history, not on floating overlays.

[FAQ]

Frequently asked.

01How does the free trial work?
Download FloatSnap and use it with full functionality for 14 days. No credit card, no signup. After 14 days, enter a license key to keep using it.
02How many Macs can I use it on?
One license activates up to 5 Macs. Desktop, laptop, work machine — covered.
03Is this a subscription?
No. $5 once. You own it forever, including all future updates.
04Does it collect my data?
Nothing. Everything happens locally on your Mac. The app has no analytics, no account, and no server — we couldn't see your screenshots even if we wanted to. Screenshots are never stored anywhere unless you explicitly save them; they exist only on screen until you dismiss them.
05What macOS version do I need?
macOS 15.5 (Sequoia) or later. We use ScreenCaptureKit and Vision, which need modern APIs.
06Can I get a refund?
There's a 14-day free trial, so we generally don't. If something's broken, email us — we'll make it right.
07How is FloatSnap different from ScreenFloat?
Different categories of app, despite the similar name. ScreenFloat (by Eternal Storms Software, Mac App Store) is a screenshot manager — it captures screenshots and organizes them in a searchable library you can tag and revisit. FloatSnap is a floating-overlay tool — capture a region, pin it on top of every window, dismiss when done. Different problems, different workflows.
08Does it work on Apple Silicon?
Yes. FloatSnap ships as a universal binary and runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4) and Intel Macs.
09Does it need an internet connection?
Only once — to activate your license key. After that, screenshots, OCR, annotation, and save all work fully offline. Apple's Vision framework runs OCR locally on your Mac, no cloud calls.
10What's the keyboard shortcut?
⌘⇧9 (Command-Shift-9). You can also click the menu bar icon to start a capture. A custom-shortcut setting is on the roadmap.
11Does it support multiple monitors?
Yes. Capture from any display, and the resulting floating screenshot can be dragged across all of them. Each floater stays on top within its current Space and display.
12Is it useful for accounting and data entry?
Very — finance and accounting work is one of its biggest use cases. Capture an invoice, receipt, or bank statement and it floats above QuickBooks, Excel, Xero, or your browser while you type. Use built-in OCR to pull numbers out without retyping. And because nothing is ever stored or uploaded, client financial data never leaves your Mac.
